Sadie's Streetware (image coming soon)

So I walked into my mother’s house the other night, digital camera in hand ready to upload a few of the pictures I had taken of a mural in town. As soon as I walked through the door, the dogs greeted me, which was no surprise. However, I looked down at my mother’s dog, Sadie and saw her little stub of a tail wagging out from underneath a pink trench coat. Yes, that’s right, my mother’s dog had on not only a coat, but a pink coat, and not only a pink coat, but a trench coat. With designs on it. It was at that moment I decided to hold off on my mural post, and post a few pictures of her instead.
Obviously many people limit fashion to humans. What humans wear, the trends they follow. However, what most people don’t realize, especially in today’s world is that people are becoming more and more attached to their pets. In certain places around the country, and even the world, pets are welcome at restaurants and bars, and sometimes can even be served. It would only follow that pets will soon be susceptible to fashion trends. The pink trench coat is a far cry away from a simple blanket, or even just a shirt which some owners put on their pets to protect them from harsh weather conditions. This particular item of clothing came from Target, which most people know features designers at affordable prices. Does this mean these designers could potentially start designing for pets as well as humans? Dog shows (as well as horse and cat shows) are already prevalent around the world. These competitions judge the animals on their looks and the way the walk; the way they carry themselves. It really isn’t all that different from fashion shows, it’s just missing the clothing and a proper theme.
To me, this moment was inspiring because I realized how many different avenues haven’t really been explored as far as fashion goes. Being a visual merchandising student, I not only look at fashion, but other retail markets. It may be a little over the top, but I think a lot of people would be interested in something like this in the future, even if they might protest it outwardly, I think it would be like a guilty pleasure, especially for those people that carry their toy breeds around in designer purses.
And even if you’re not interested in it at all, perhaps these images will allow you to look at fashion in a different way or see different avenues you haven’t before.
